BUMP Microdrama Turns an AI-Generated Boyfriend Into a Social Trap

Summary

Japanese short-drama app BUMP has launched “The 30,000-Yen Rental Boyfriend: The Cost of Maintaining a Woman’s Pride,” a 22-episode original series starring Ui Mihara, Yuki Sakurai, Nana Shinnoo and Tomoka Takeda. Episodes run about one to three minutes. The story follows university beauty-pageant winner Misaki Saijo, who invents a high-status boyfriend with an AI-generated image for social media. Pressured into a triple date with a rival, she hires a rental boyfriend who resembles the synthetic man; the lie then expands into mounting fees, debt and mutual exposure of secrets. Operator emole positions the drama as a darkly comic story about appearance, approval and status competition online. The company says BUMP offers ad-supported, transactional and subscription viewing and has reached four million downloads, though the available source is emole’s own syndicated press release and those platform figures are not independently verified.

Hana’s perspective

I find the premise notable because generative AI is not presented as production machinery but as an ordinary tool for identity performance. A fake boyfriend image becomes the first layer of a larger social lie. That makes AI legible through familiar microdrama engines: status anxiety, escalating debt, rivalry and exposure. The 22-episode structure also shows how Japanese vertical platforms are adapting local talent and social-media themes to the format rather than simply importing Chinese-style plots. Whether the series says anything deeper about synthetic identity will depend on how long it lets that first deception matter.
