Summary
Huace Film & TV unveiled a trailer for Journey to the West: The Missing Five Hundred Years at MIPCOM in Cannes on October 13. The company describes the project as a fully AI-generated 3D animated series that it leads in development with Utopai Studios. Set before the canonical pilgrimage, the story follows the exiled Golden Cicada through ten reincarnations as he gradually forms the group destined to travel west, while Sun Wukong remains imprisoned beneath Five Elements Mountain. Ren Haidong directs, with The Lion Boy writer Li Zelin as head writer, Wu Linfeng as writer and Carlos Lutterbach as animation director. Huace plans a 2027 release and says it may also explore a theatrical version. The announcement provides creative credits and story detail but no production-method breakdown.
Hana’s perspective
I think the most useful part of this announcement is the named human team. “Fully AI-generated” can obscure authorship, yet Huace lists a director, head writer, writer and animation director with substantial credits. That suggests the real experiment is whether generative production can support a professionally led serialized project, not whether a model makes a show alone. The company still needs to explain its workflow, training and rights practices, and what 3D assets remain editable. A trailer can establish ambition; the six-episode production will reveal consistency.
