Lanzarote Workshop Pairs Generative-AI Production Skills With Image Authenticity

Summary

The César Manrique Foundation scheduled a free three-hour workshop in Arrecife, Lanzarote, for October 8 on how generative AI is changing audiovisual creation and editing. Led by the United Unknown collective, the session was designed around examples, demonstrations and participatory exercises using image and video tools. Its agenda included multimodal models, natural-language creative workflows and methods for directing and critically evaluating generated results. It also addressed the growing difficulty of distinguishing real, artificial and manipulated images. A segment of the documentary Everything Is a Remix was selected to prompt discussion about copying, influence, transformation and homage. United Unknown has incorporated AI tools, including deepfake software and retrained image models, into its work since 2019.

Hana’s perspective

I like that this program treats AI literacy as visual literacy, not software training. The useful skill is not memorizing whichever generator is current. It is learning to direct a model, challenge its output and explain where an image came from. Pairing hands-on generation with questions about remix, appropriation and authenticity also puts technique beside responsibility. That matters for film and animation because synthetic images can be convincing before they are coherent, original or ethically sourced. A three-hour local workshop cannot resolve those issues, but its curriculum offers a practical template: teach craft, criticism and provenance together.
