Film Craft Becomes the Differentiator in China’s AI-Video Scene

Summary

A report by Yiyu Observation says creators with film, animation and advertising backgrounds are increasingly prominent in Chinese AI-video competitions. It points to Douyin winner Helong, made by a team with more than a decade of film experience; a Bilibili competition winner trained in animation and visual work; and Website, which received awards at the Reply AI Film Festival. The article argues that as models become widely available, creators are differentiating themselves through scripts, storyboards, camera logic, editing, art direction and sustained character development. It also profiles creators outside formal film schools who apply lived experience and careful emotional direction. The conclusion is not that AI has failed to lower barriers, but that lower technical barriers make creative judgment more visible.

Hana’s perspective

This is what maturity looks like for AI video: technical access broadens, then taste, staging and continuity become the constraint. I do not read the success of trained filmmakers as proof that newcomers are excluded. It shows what newcomers need to learn. Models can collapse crew size, but they do not eliminate directing. The best opportunity is to make those production skills teachable while preserving routes for artists from outside traditional film schools.
