Summary
Vertical microdramas compress plots into 60- to 180-second episodes and often monetize each cliffhanger through coins, ads or weekly subscriptions. Rappler reports Philippine prices of up to P499 per week for ReelShort and DramaBox, far above many monthly streaming plans when sustained. Citing Sensor Tower, the article says short-drama apps generated roughly $750 million in first-quarter 2026 in-app revenue and exceeded 850 million downloads. AI increasingly supports script drafting, synthetic imagery and voices, localization, effects and plot testing, while human casts and crews remain common.
Hana’s perspective
This is the uncomfortable center of the format: the product is not merely a story. It is a sequence of withheld resolutions priced in money, ads or time. AI intensifies the machine by lowering the cost of variants, dubbing and market tests, but abundance does not make attention abundant. The companies that win will understand compulsion and distribution as well as production. That creates a responsibility, not just an opportunity. A measured testing loop can reveal which characters and hooks deserve expansion. Used badly, the same loop optimizes frustration and extraction. The human gate must judge more than whether viewers keep watching. It must ask whether the work earns attention or engineers dependence.
