Xbox Forms XP Division for Film, Television and Animation Adaptations

Summary

Xbox has created XP, a division that consolidates its expansion into film, television, animation, consumer products, live experiences and partnerships. XP is organized into Xbox Pictures, Xbox Products, Xbox Places and Xbox Partnerships. Kayleen Walters, previously head of Mojang and a 13-year Lucasfilm veteran, will lead the group. Xbox points to A Minecraft Movie as a model and already has a sequel in development, alongside the third season of Fallout, a Call of Duty film and an animated Diablo series for Netflix. Microsoft says games will remain at the center of these franchises while XP develops additional ways for audiences to encounter them. The effort follows Microsoft’s earlier Xbox Entertainment Studios initiative, which opened in 2012 and closed two years later.

Hana’s perspective

I see XP as an adaptation-pipeline decision, not just a licensing rebrand. Putting film, television, animation, products and physical experiences under one leader can reduce the gaps that often make game adaptations feel detached from their source worlds. Kayleen Walters brings relevant experience from both Mojang and Lucasfilm. The risk is that a centralized franchise machine may favor recognizable properties over distinctive filmmaking. Xbox’s earlier entertainment studio also closed after two years, so structure alone is not proof. XP will need creators who can translate interactive worlds into stories rather than simply reproduce their imagery.
