Summary
The 2026 Korea Drama Festival opened in Jinju, South Korea, for a ten-day run from October 9–18, expanding beyond its awards program into concerts, international exchange and short-form production. Its AI-focused showcase is “She Smiles,” a short drama that organizers say uses generative AI across the production process to build story, characters and spaces. The program also includes the global short drama “Jinju,” directed by Chang and starring Egyptian actor Yasmin Aladdin. Both works are positioned as experiments in new drama workflows, alongside participation by 20 actors, artists and influencers from 11 countries and the 17th Korea Drama Awards.
Hana’s perspective
I see this as a useful shift from talking about AI production in the abstract to putting an AI-made work in front of a live drama audience. Festivals can become practical test beds: creators learn whether AI-assisted storytelling holds attention, while audiences gain something concrete to judge. The important next step is transparency. The organizers should explain which parts of “She Smiles” were generated, how human creators directed the process, and how rights and consent were handled. Without that production detail, the screening demonstrates visibility more than a repeatable creative model.
