Zhang Yimou Advances Three-Body Problem Film With Unspecified AI Component

Summary

Director Zhang Yimou said at the Busan International Film Festival that his feature adaptation of Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem is moving forward after several years of script work. His team collected about 400,000 online comments about readers’ expectations, he said. Beijing Enlight Media, the studio behind Ne Zha 2, is producing, and Deadline reports the film is understood to include a significant AI component. No production schedule or technical description of that component was given. The property has already produced Netflix and Tencent live-action series, a Bilibili animated adaptation and an earlier unfinished Chinese feature.

Hana’s perspective

I find the project significant because it puts a major Chinese filmmaker, a globally recognized science-fiction property and an animation powerhouse in the same experiment. But “significant AI component” is too vague to celebrate or condemn. The useful questions are where AI enters the pipeline, who controls the output and whether it improves difficult visualization without flattening design choices. A film this visible could normalize a workflow, so disclosure will matter.
