Summary
Spoken-word artist Marc Marcel has adapted his August album “Black Shaman Strikes Back” into a feature-length film built around the record’s poetry and music. According to a paid press release, the film combines live-action footage, original animation and AI-assisted visuals created with generative-video platform Higgsfield AI. The album functions as the film’s score and narrative foundation, with collaborators including producer Leandro Álvarez, composer and pianist Kitt Wakeley, vocalist Gem Auset and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The film received a private Hollywood screening on October 7 ahead of a planned broader release. The project follows Marcel’s 2026 Grammy nomination for the earlier album “Black Shaman.”
Hana’s perspective
I find the project most useful as an example of AI expanding an artist’s existing language rather than replacing it. The poetry and album came first; generative video helped extend their imagery into a feature alongside live action and original animation. That order matters. It gives the visuals a clear authorial source instead of asking a model to invent a film’s identity. The press release does not explain how much footage was generated, which models or workflows were used, or how rights were managed, so the production claims remain broad. More process disclosure would make this a stronger case study for independent filmmakers considering the same path.
