Chinese Microdrama Forum Says AI Series Are Entering a Content Competition

Summary

A Beijing review session examined eight live-action microdramas and four AI productions, arguing that Chinese AI short-form drama is moving from a technology contest toward a content contest. Directors of children’s animation “Gulubi Office” and the Xuan-paper story “Peach Blossom Pool” said they now prioritize storytelling and human artistic judgment over technical novelty. “Northern Notes” director Yang Nian said the series exceeded RMB 1 million in revenue sharing during its first week. A university speaker claimed AI productions represented more than 74% of 367,000 microdramas released in the first half of 2026, but the report provides no methodology for those figures.

Hana’s perspective

The strongest signal here is not the enormous volume claim but the shift in what practitioners discuss. Once directors stop defending AI as a novelty and start debating narrative, audience and format, the medium is maturing. I would still treat the quoted market figures cautiously because this report gives no methodology. Revenue from one series is more concrete, but a sustainable sector will require repeat audiences, transparent accounting and work that does not merely automate familiar “power-up” plots.
