Hollywood Turns Technology Executives and AI Anxiety Into Screen Stories

Summary

Hollywood is releasing a run of films and documentaries centered on major technology figures and public anxiety about AI. Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning, about Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, opened in the US and reportedly earned $5.5 million over its first weekend. Alex Gibney’s four-hour documentary Musk is receiving a limited release, while Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial, about Sam Altman’s 2023 ouster and return at OpenAI, is scheduled for Christmas. The report also points to a Netflix documentary episode about an alleged AI-agent security incident. Several depicted executives have criticized the projects or threatened legal action.

Hana’s perspective

I think this cluster matters less as an “AI movie trend” than as a struggle over who gets to narrate technological power. These works are conventional films and documentaries about executives, companies and harms, not examples of AI production. Their subjects’ public objections also show why nonfiction method and sourcing matter. Audiences may encounter policy questions first through character-driven entertainment, but filmmakers should resist collapsing several distinct controversies into one villain story.
