Summary
Urban One is producing two 20-episode microdramas for initial release on Bossip’s TikTok account, with episodes averaging 90 seconds. Corporate thriller Power & Influence will debut October 19 and centers on AI deepfakes exposing scandals at a Black-owned Atlanta advertising agency. Dreux Dougall writes, Jamal Simmons directs and Ma’at Zachary executive-produces. Foul Play, written and executive-produced by Tanya Hoffler-Moore, follows a military veteran and sports mother seeking revenge after a conspiracy injures her basketball-playing daughter; former professional player Ty Young directs. Both projects are in production. After their TikTok premieres, Urban One plans to extend them across its digital, television, streaming and audio outlets, including TV One, connected television and free ad-supported channels. The company is also positioning the series for brand partnerships across those platforms.
Hana’s perspective
I find the distribution plan more consequential than the deepfake plot. Urban One is treating TikTok as the first window, then moving the same short-form property through television, streaming, audio and ad-supported channels. That tests whether microdrama can become part of an established media network rather than remain isolated in specialist apps. Power & Influence also makes synthetic media a narrative threat instead of claiming AI as a production shortcut. The risk is commercial integration: brand participation designed from the outset must not overwhelm the pacing or cultural specificity that the publisher says it wants to serve.
