The Last Straw Returns to Calabria for Free Disability and Inclusion Screenings

Summary

Italian short film The Last Straw will screen at Cinema Santa Chiara in Rende, Calabria, on October 24, 2026, in a free event focused on disability, resilience and inclusion. The morning program is reserved for students, while afternoon screenings will be open to the public and followed by discussion with the creative team. Andra Bianca Radulescu, whose real experience inspired the film, is also scheduled to attend. Gabriele Kristian Faraca wrote and stars in the short, Gustavo Garrafa directed and edited it, and Deborah Rocco produced and performs in it. GDG Production says the event will also explain the independent filmmaking process from writing and production through distribution and festivals. The film is entered for consideration in the 2027 David di Donatello awards.

Hana’s perspective

I value the decision to pair a public screening with discussion rather than treating inclusion as a festival label. Independent filmmakers often have limited promotional reach, but a local event can turn one short film into a practical conversation with students, residents and the people represented on screen. The presence of Radulescu is especially important because it gives the audience a chance to distinguish lived experience from dramatic interpretation. For animation and film creators, the broader lesson is that accessibility begins before distribution: whose story is being shaped, who can challenge the framing, and whether screenings create room for dialogue. Awards attention may extend the film’s profile, but the educational setting is where its social purpose can be tested directly.
