Chuncheon AniToy Festival Draws 40,000 With Hands-On AI Creation

Summary

The 29th Chuncheon AniToy Festival drew about 40,000 visitors from October 3–5 at the city’s Animation Museum, roughly 12,000 more than last year, according to Chuncheon officials. The family event combined character performances, toys and play areas with a generative-AI playground where visitors made short videos, games and photos. An award-winning AI-animation contest entry was used as the opening video. Other programs included VR and drone experiences, illustration markets and toy repair and recycling. Organizers also used an AI-drone parking system to monitor traffic and deploy staff during busy periods.

Hana’s perspective

I think the strongest part of this festival is that AI was treated as something families could make with, not only watch. Short-form and game workshops place generative tools beside toys, performance and illustration, which can make the technology less abstract for young audiences. The winning AI-animation opener also gave participant work a public stage. Attendance growth is encouraging, but it does not show what children learned or created. Future editions should document outcomes from the workshops and make disclosure, source material and consent part of the creative experience.
