Singapore Microdrama ‘Connected’ Mixes Live Action, Animation and AI Effects

Summary

SPH Media and Singtel have launched Connected, a 24-episode Singapore horror-comedy made for mobile viewing. The series follows investigators played by Lim Yan Xin and Fauzi Azzhar as they explore paranormal events drawn from Stomp reader submissions and local urban legends. Episodes begin rolling out on October 10 across the partners’ YouTube, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram channels. Co-directed by Daryl Burney and Jason Riley, the production combines live-action footage, computer animation and unspecified AI tools in a hybrid visual-effects workflow with Editlounge and Gengis AI. Original creature concepts came from SPH Media senior animator Harriet Buckland. SPH Media says writers, artists, actors and filmmakers remained in creative control.

Hana’s perspective

I think the most useful part of Connected is not that it used AI, but where the tool sits in the authorship chain. Reader stories supplied the cultural material, artists designed the creatures, performers carried the comedy, and a mixed VFX process handled images that were hard to shoot. That is a clearer production model than treating generation as a substitute for a creative team. The unresolved question is specificity: SPH Media did not explain which shots or tasks used AI. More transparent credits would help other producers judge what the technology actually contributed and help audiences understand the human work behind the result.
