Summary
A NetEase Technology article republished by Sina argues that China’s AI microdrama boom is creating an “abundance trap.” It cites the China Netcasting Services Association for 367,000 microdramas released in the first half of 2026 and a DataEye report for 221,900 new AI comic dramas on Douyin, of which 1,055 passed 100 million views. The article contrasts that volume with a 165-title recommendation list from the broadcasting regulator and says one operator is trying to build a pipeline linking licensed web-fiction IP, AI-assisted scripting and storyboards, production, and its own distribution platform. These figures and the operator’s performance claims come through the article rather than underlying datasets, so they remain reported estimates.
Hana’s perspective
I see this as a warning against confusing throughput with a healthy creative market. When generation becomes cheap, discovery, editorial judgment and trusted IP become more valuable, not less. The article’s figures should be treated as reported estimates, but its underlying production lesson is sound: a studio cannot automate its way out of weak writing or undifferentiated art direction. Durable AI pipelines will be measured by repeat audiences and sustainable margins, not the number of episodes they can emit.
