AI-Assisted Anthology Gods Don’t Give Gifts Sets December Theatrical and Oscar Campaign

Summary

Fable plans a limited US theatrical release of Zack London’s R-rated science-fiction anthology Gods Don’t Give Gifts on December 4, after moving it from October 30 as it mounts a campaign for Best Animated Feature consideration. The four linked stories take place in Niiro Cradle, where consciousness, memory and synthetic bodies have become commodities. Reports describe generative AI as central to the visuals, while humans handled writing, direction, shot-by-shot animation work, editing, voice performances, music, sound and postproduction. The Academy does not automatically disqualify generative-AI use, but its rules emphasize human creative authorship. Submission is not a nomination, and no distributor has been named.

Hana’s perspective

I see the theatrical run as the real experiment, not the awards slogan. Generative imagery can reduce the barrier to putting an ambitious world on screen, but the film still depends on human writing, direction, performance and editorial judgment. The Academy’s emphasis on human authorship is therefore the right test: audiences and voters should assess the finished work and demand a clear account of who made which creative decisions.
