Chinese Microdrama Seminar Puts Storytelling Ahead of AI Spectacle

Summary

A Beijing seminar organized under China’s broadcast regulator brought together creators of eight live-action and four AI-generated microdramas. Participants said AI production is moving from a technology contest toward a content contest. Directors described persistent problems with character consistency, performance continuity and camera stability, while creators of AI works about children’s animation, intangible heritage and adventure emphasized that artistic choices remain human responsibilities. The event also examined live-action projects grounded in interviews, history and local industry. Speakers argued that AI and live-action microdramas are developing different strengths rather than following one replacement path.

Hana’s perspective

I find the shift from model spectacle to production discipline more important than the headline market numbers. Directors are still fighting consistency, performance continuity and stable camera movement, while the strongest accounts stress research and human artistic judgment. That combination suggests AI microdramas are maturing only when teams stop treating generation as the product. Short formats can be a practical testing ground, but scale alone does not establish quality or durable economics.
