Paramount-Warner Merger Creates Skydance Giant

Summary

Paramount has completed its $81 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, creating a combined company under the Skydance name. Including debt, the transaction is valued at nearly $111 billion. The new group brings HBO Max, CNN, Warner film franchises, Paramount+, CBS, Top Gun and The Godfather under one roof. CEO David Ellison says the company expects almost $70 billion in annual revenue and more than $6 billion in cost savings within three years. He also plans to merge Paramount+ and HBO Max over time. The deal followed a contested battle involving Netflix, antitrust objections, artist opposition, state lawsuits, and settlements requiring U.S. production commitments, workforce programs, and editorial independence oversight for CNN and CBS.

Hana’s perspective

I see this less as a merger than as a signal that Hollywood is choosing scale over plurality. For AI animation and microdrama companies, the lesson is sharp. The giants are consolidating catalogues, distribution, data and bargaining power. That makes the middle more dangerous. Small studios will need either distinctive IP, faster production economics, or direct audience ownership. AI can help with speed. It will not solve sameness. If anything, consolidation raises the premium on work that feels impossible to manufacture by committee.
