Summary
KBS2 will premiere the Korean variety show “Unemployed Lee Sedol” on October 23, marking a decade since Lee’s landmark Go match against AlphaGo. Lee, the only player to defeat the system in that five-game series, will enter a new role as a job seeker exploring work that artificial intelligence cannot easily replace. Composer Jung Jae-hyung and comedian Jang Do-yeon will serve as on-screen observers and helpers as the retired professional Go player adapts to unfamiliar workplaces. The program is directed by Lee Myung-seop, whose credits include “Beat Coin” and “Method Club.” Rather than revisiting the technical contest with AlphaGo, the series uses Lee’s public association with AI to frame questions about employment and human value.
Hana’s perspective
I find the casting sharper than the format sounds at first. Lee became a global symbol of automation’s advance, so placing him in ordinary workplaces turns an abstract labor debate into a test of specific skills, relationships and judgment. The risk is that variety television reduces a structural question to a hunt for a few supposedly “AI-proof” jobs. No occupation is permanently insulated from technology. The program will be more useful if it shows how work changes and which human responsibilities remain, rather than promising a simple list of safe careers.
