Swiss Micro-Festival Prefers Handmade Shorts Over Generative AI

Summary

Filmmaker and animator Michele “Mike Bizzik” Bizzini is inviting submissions for the first Trashort MicroFest, scheduled for March 12, 2027, at Osteria La Fabbrica in Losone, Switzerland. The event welcomes amateur shorts made with minimal resources, including smartphones, and deliberately values experimentation, humor and technical imperfection over professional polish. One notable guideline is a preference for films made without generative AI. Bizzini acknowledges that AI tools can be practical or entertaining, but argues that they can homogenize artistic language and style. His festival instead aims to foreground craft and an author’s recognizable personal trace. The audience will help decide how the submitted “trash” films should be received at the screening.

Hana’s perspective

I like that this event treats imperfection as a creative resource rather than a defect to be optimized away. Generative systems can make an image look polished quickly, but polish is not the same as personality, timing or a point of view. Bizzini’s preference is deliberately narrow and personal, not a universal rule for cinema. That distinction matters. A small festival can choose a handmade constraint to reveal different kinds of talent, just as another event might foreground AI experimentation. The useful debate is not whether one method is legitimate, but what each set of constraints helps artists discover.
