Summary
Microsoft has introduced the Surface Laptop Ultra and Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, two Windows machines built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform for running large AI models locally. Configurations reach 128 GB of unified memory, while Microsoft claims selected RTX Spark PCs generate video up to 6.2 times faster than a comparable M5 Pro MacBook, based on its own preproduction tests. In a staged creative demonstration, a designer modeled a spacecraft in Blender, used local Gemma 4, Flux.2 and Hunyuan 3D models to develop the world and assets, then sent only final Unreal Engine assembly to a cloud model. The Laptop Ultra starts at €2,899 in France; the 128 GB Dev Box costs $6,000 in the United States.
Hana’s perspective
I see the most useful development as the attempt to connect local models directly to Blender, image generation, 3D conversion and Unreal rather than treating on-device AI as a chatbot benchmark. Keeping early assets on a workstation could help studios protect unreleased work and reduce cloud fees. But Microsoft’s speed claims come from internal tests on preproduction machines, and the prepared demo does not prove that a complex production remains stable over weeks. ARM software compatibility, sustained performance, noise and model licensing will determine whether this becomes a dependable creator workstation or an expensive showcase.
