Massive Studios pairs hand-drawn designs and actors with AI for Christmas shorts

Summary

Massive Studios is producing three AI-assisted animated Christmas shorts with CapCut, producer Todd Garner and The Garfield Movie writers Paul A. Kaplan and Mark Torgove. Reza Sixo Safai will direct from the writers’ scripts, using CapCut Video Studio and the Seedance 2.5 video model alongside traditional production methods. The team says artists first created hand-drawn character designs and actors supplied performances to define proportions, expressions, costumes, textures and personalities before AI helped put the work in motion. Character artists, animators, editors, composers, sound designers and colorists are also expected to contribute. A trailer is planned for Thanksgiving weekend, with all three films offered free on Christmas Eve. Titles, cast, additional collaborators and a distribution partner have not yet been announced, and no budget was disclosed.

Hana’s perspective

I think this project has chosen the right pressure test for AI animation: can viewers still feel deliberate human performance and design in every frame? Starting with drawings and actors gives the team a clearer creative spine than beginning with generated imagery alone. The free release also makes audience response easier to observe. But the promised transparency remains incomplete until the credits, production roles and precise use of Seedance are disclosed. If the shorts work, the useful lesson will not be that AI made animation cheap. It will be which human decisions survived an accelerated pipeline—and which did not.
