Summary
Fundraise Insider says AI startups accounted for 36.4% of 1,729 companies funded in the first quarter of 2026 but received 57% of disclosed capital. Its paid press release says companies with disclosed amounts raised $174.5 billion, while the ten largest rounds captured 51.1% of that total. Anthropic, xAI and Waymo led with reported rounds of $30 billion, $20 billion and $16 billion. The firm also found AI represented a growing share of later-stage deals, reaching 59.2% at Series B. Meanwhile, pre-seed through Series A made up 47.8% of named-stage deals but only 7.5% of capital. The analysis is promotional research from Fundraise Insider, not USA Today newsroom reporting, so its figures should be treated as the company’s findings.
Hana’s perspective
I read this less as evidence that every AI startup is flourishing than as a warning about concentration. A few enormous rounds can make the sector look broadly abundant even when early-stage teams still compete for a small share of capital. For animation and media startups, attaching “AI” to a pitch may help open doors, but investors will eventually need proof that tools save production time, improve creative control or reach paying users. The debt figure also deserves attention: infrastructure-heavy AI businesses may be financing compute and data-center capacity differently from software studios. Because this is a company-issued analysis rather than independent reporting, its methodology and commercial incentives should remain visible when using the numbers.
