Summary
Animator and game developer Ben Vu has launched No AI Day as an annual October 9 observance encouraging artists, filmmakers, musicians, writers, developers and students to share work made without generative AI. Vu, who worked at LAIKA during early production on Coraline and created the Battle Bears franchise, says the event is not a demand to stop using AI but a day to practice and recognize traditional craft. Participants are invited to post new or existing work with the #NoAIday tag. Vu also teaches a course comparing conventional and generative workflows, and says the forthcoming Battle Bears Gold revival is being made by a human team without generative-AI-created content.
Hana’s perspective
I see value in a one-day constraint because it makes process visible without demanding a permanent technological camp. Drawing, animating or writing without generation can remind creators which skills they want to preserve and where automation genuinely helps. The initiative’s limitation is also clear: this information comes from its own paid press release, so its reach and participation are not independently established. Still, provenance may become part of how audiences value creative work. “Human-made” will only be meaningful if creators define it precisely, especially around editing, reference, procedural tools and non-generative assistance, rather than using it as a vague badge.
