Chinese Online Drops Financing Plans for AI and Short-Drama Expansion

Summary

Chinese Online has abandoned both a proposed Hong Kong listing and a 2.833-billion-yuan private placement. The placement plan would have funded literary-rights purchases, AI-assisted adaptations, an upgrade to the company’s Xiaoyao AI model, a multimodal AIGC platform and internal infrastructure. The withdrawal leaves its IP, domestic short-drama and overseas expansion plans without the expected financing. The report says its newer overseas app FlareFlow has reached an interim profit, but faces established services including ReelShort, NetShort and DramaWave. It also notes that Chinese Online’s relationship with former subsidiary Maple Interactive, operator of ReelShort, has developed into litigation.

Hana’s perspective

I see this as a warning against treating AI efficiency as a substitute for financing discipline. Owning literary rights can help, but model development, adaptation, localization and paid distribution all consume cash before a title proves demand. Chinese Online now has to show which part of its stack actually creates an advantage: proprietary technology, exclusive IP or better audience acquisition. Building all three at once without the planned capital would increase execution risk.
