Sony Expands AI Hiring for PlayStation Character and Animation Tools

Summary

Sony Interactive Entertainment is recruiting a lead character-tools engineer to expand the use of AI and machine learning across PlayStation Studios’ character creation, rigging, animation and runtime workflows. The job listing, reported by The Game Post, also asks for experience with agentic systems that can accelerate code creation and testing. Sony already says several studios use Mockingbird, a facial-animation tool that reduces work previously measured in hours to a fraction of a second, including on Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. A separate research tool converts video of real hairstyles into detailed 3D hair models, although Sony has not identified a shipped game using it. The listing names no new model or adopting studio, and it does not establish that future tools will generate finished characters.

Hana’s perspective

I think the important detail is the separation between assistive pipeline automation and generating finished characters. Mockingbird targets a repetitive facial-animation task, while the hiring brief also covers rigging, deformation, simulation and code testing. That is a more concrete use of machine learning than broad promises to “make games with AI.” Centralizing these tools could spread productivity gains across studios, but Sony should publish artist-facing controls, quality measures and labor safeguards. Faster output is only useful if animators can revise it and retain responsibility for performance.
